Privileged Identity Management quick-start for MSP

Published Feb 15, 2024 • Updated May 1, 2026

Overview

PIM provides just-in-time admin roles with approvals and logs—essential for Tier-0 protection.

Start

  1. License Entra ID P2 where PIM required.
  2. Assign eligible (not active) assignments for Global/Security/Privileged roles.
  3. Configure activation MFA and approval for highest roles.

Operational habits

  • Remove standing admin where possible.
  • Review audit logs monthly for suspicious activations.

Pitfalls

Over-complicated approver chains causing outage delays—define break-glass PIM bypass procedure for Sev1 only, tightly logged.
