Power outage runbook for PBX and SBC

Published Aug 25, 2024 • Updated May 1, 2026

Overview

Voice is life-safety adjacent for some sites. UPS and generator tests must include SBC, core switch, PoE budget.

Runbook sections

  • Detection: UPS SNMP traps, carrier portal LOS alerts.
  • Priorities: 911 routes, security desk, elevator phones per legal ladder.
  • Runtime: UPS minutes at current load; which voice subnets you shed first.

Testing

Semi-annual pull the plug drill on staging gear minimum; annual full site if client critical; log actual hold-up time.

Cloud dependency

Teams Phone still needs local internet and often SBC on-prem—starlink/cellular backup conversation belongs here.

Recovery

Cold-start order: core switch → SBC → DHCP / TFTP servers; validate NTP before TLS sessions freak out.

Comms template

Status page + SMS tree for “inbound calls rerouted to cell queue”—prewritten saves 20 minutes of panic prose.
