Print server driver isolation best practices

Published Sep 3, 2024 • Updated May 1, 2026

Overview

Vendors ship kernel-mode drivers that bluescreen entire print spoolers. Isolated Print Driver model contains blast radius.

Deployment

Prefer Type 4 (V4) built-in drivers when quality acceptable; package Type 3 only when required; test on isolated spooler host in prod-like load.

Architecture

Separate general queue servers from line-of-business label printers; restart one pool without killing legal department.

Monitoring

PrintService-Operational log alerts for driver crashes; DISM health on spooler hosts monthly.

Change control

Printer additions require pilot user group; rollback = remove driver package + clear DriverStore.

Security

Printer SNMP default strings and Internet-printing features disabled unless needed—IoT-class footholds.

DR

Export Brm.xml* or vendor backup; restore order documented—people notice printing before ERP.
